Queer Fears: Against the Cultural Turn

This article provides a strong critique of queer theory and politics and is intended to stimulate discussion of the wider cultural turn in the study of sexualities. There are three sections. The first considers definitions of queer theory and practice and criticizes the extent to which it marks a true break in lesbian and gay studies. The second provides a more detailed critique of the work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Judith Butler. The third analyses the cultural politics which have developed alongside queer theory and raises serious concerns as to their potential for ending the oppression of sexual minorities. Comparisons are also made with earlier studies of sexuality and gender where appropriate.
